From the French frontier to the beginning of the Canal de Berdún plains, the Aragon Subordan river and its small tributaries form the backbone of the extensive Hecho valley. The present municipality includes the villages of Hecho, Siresa, Embún and Urdués. Hecho is remarkable for the outstanding conservation of its singular traditional architecture, presided over by the imposing parish church of San Martín.

The ethnological museum in Casa Gastón displays the authentic traditional costume worn by the inhabitants of Hecho until the middle of the 20th century. The “cheso” dialect is spoken at home and in the streets. This variant of Aragonese is treasured by its speakers and remains one of the most spoken dialects.

To the north of the municipal lands, at the foot of the Palo pass with its Roman road, the “Selva de Oza” with its profusion of beech forests is the backdrop for the so-called “Corona de los Muertos” (Crown of the Dead) - one of the best collections of megalithic monuments in the Pyrenees.

The Aragon Subordán river squeezes through the impressive “Boca del Infierno” (Mouth of Hell) before opening out into the broader valley near Siresa, home to the ancient monastery of St Peter, a prime example of the primitive Romanesque style in Aragón. The recently restored altarpieces inside the church contribute greatly to the value of this monument. The quiet village of Siresa that grew around the monastery survives to the present day.

Hidden in a distant corner of the valley is the village of Urdués, with its parish church dedicated to San Martín. The renowned chapel of Catarecha can be found nearby.

Embún is the southernmost of the villages in this municipality and perches on a hill above the right bank of the Aragon Subordán river. In the valley by the roadside, there is a small collection of scattered houses that were once inns and taverns. Carefully tended vegetable gardens abound on the riverbanks.

Between Ansó and the Biniés Gorge, the Romanesque chapel of St Lucía and its beautiful valley full of little barns and stables also belongs to the municipality of Hecho.

Other villages in the municipality: Urdués – Embún - Siresa
