Jaca. Town Hall. 15th - 16th century

The Town Hall of Jaca is one of the most interesting examples of the Aragonese Plateresque style. It was built in two phases during the 15th and 16th centuries and its façade is without a doubt the most impressive element of the building. It was designed by Juan de Rosellet and built by stonemasons from the Basque province of Vizcaya in 1544. The restoration work carried out during the first decade of the 21st century has significantly altered its external appearance and restored it to its original beauty, removing the dark polish from its surface and cleaning it to reveal an attractive porous stone beneath. The culmination of this long restoration and consolidation project has been the installation of new eaves in the style of Aragonese Renaissance palaces, recreated to match the originals which were substituted at the beginning of the 20th century.

The façade is largely dominated by a large Plateresque doorway which has Tuscan elements such as dated base stones, a semi-circular archway and carved vases on either side of the arch. On the second floor there are five arquitraved windows decorated with pediments depicting Aragonese bars. The third floor, created as part of a building project carried out in the 20th century and subsequently modified once again during the recent restoration (mentioned above), is made up of a gallery of typically Aragonese arches. The main entrance is flanked by two impressive and substantial windows protected by iron bars forged by Simón de Maisonabe from Jaca.

The bell from the nearby Clock Tower is exhibited inside the renaissance entrance hall. Also of note is the exceptional municipal archive which rates as one of the most important in Aragón and which harbours valuable documents dating from 1042, including the “La Cadena” compendium of the rights and privileges enjoyed by the town since its foundation.
