The Roman road that crossed the village of Borce went on to become the road of the viscounty and later the Santiago Pilgrimage Route. The village has a number of interesting buildings and houses, some of these very ancient, such as the Santiago de Compostela Hospital (now open to the public) and a 13th-century Fortified House. The house of Bernard Salefranque is also worth a mention. He was a royal notary under Jeanne d’Albret and his house has a coat of arms, windows with mullions and stone sculptures on the north window.
A route around the village reveals other elements of interest, such as the small square with panoramic views, Sayerse House (originally a watchtower), bread ovens, a wash-house, several double windows with latticework, pointed arches and sculptures of animals, of the tree of life, of crosses and walking sticks. The restored 16th-century church has a font of black limestone decorated with a scallop, a walking stick and a bearded mask. More recently Borce has been associated with bears. Its animal enclosure illustrates the story and the history of this animal that has had a profound influence on the Aspe valley and its identity.
