The municipal area of Sigüés extends from the border of the province of Huesca in the east, to the border with Navarre in the west and from the summits of the the Leyre range and the Orba mountain in the north to the banks of the Aragon river and the Yesa reservoir in the south. This broad extension of territory is relatively recent and a result of the compulsory purchase and subsequent abandonment of the villages of Tiermas and Esco, which were taken over by the municipality of Sigüés, extending it towards the west.

Sigüés is a beautiful village on the left bank of the Esca river close to its merger with the Aragon river. Its parish church of St Stephen was recently declared a Monument of Cultural Interest. The village is full of interesting buildings, including the Tower of the Pomar Family (past lords of the village) and the ancient pilgrim’s hospital of St Anne. The northern branch of the Santiago Pilgrimage Route from Jaca goes through the village and crosses the Esca river over an old bridge. The road to Roncal, built at the end of the 19th century, meanders through the dramatic Sigüés gorge, passing steep cliffs that are home to numerous protected species of raptors.

Asso Veral is a small and still inhabited village which has historical links with the Counts of San Clemente, whose palace was situated on a hill in the village, next to the parish church.

Miramont is a farmhouse which used to be a dependency of the monastery of San Juan de la Peña. It is famous for its enormous kermes oak and is on the Santiago Route.

Despite being abandoned, Esco has been accorded monumental status and is dominated by the site of its ancient castle. The village, which is practically in a state of total ruin, is perched on a slope. Despite the pillage suffered by its houses, the characteristics of its traditional architecture can still be appreciated.

The ruined village of Tiermas sits on the top of a hill that dominates the Yesa reservoir. It is still possible to imagine the village in its heyday whilst walking around the remains of the church, the schoolhouse, the town hall, the old prison and the ancient walls, all of which await a project which will breath new life into them and rescue them from oblivion.

Other villages in the municipality: Asso-Veral – Tiermas - Esco
