The Kingdom of Aragón Audiovisual Centre (CIRA) is a modern, interactive space within the walls of the Barroque church in the New Monastery. Giant screens, adapted to the architecture of the church, project a film about the origins of the Aragonese crown and kingdom, using lights, sound, scale models and a moving platform below the seats to surprising effect.
The narrated account, lasting 45 minutes, relates the history and the origins of Aragon and explains how San Juan de la Peña played a crucial role in its development. The capacity of the hall is limited, as one of the two projections is viewed from a rotating platform. The films can be seen in Spanish, English and French.
The CIRA was installed within the Barroque church (restored at the same time as the rest of the monastery) with the aim of providing information to the general public on the history of the Kingdom of Aragon. The space is ideal as the film and the building it is projected in make up an unified whole. The Old Monastery of San Juan de la Peña was crucial to the creation of the ancient kingdom of Aragon. The New Monastery, which replaced the first after a devastating fire, is located in an area of great natural beauty. The recently-opened hotel makes longer stays possible.
