Martes or Martés, the latter perhaps more typical of local toponyms, belongs to the municipality of Canal de Berdún, although it had its own town hall until 1970. It is on the left bank of the Aragón river and an important stage of the historical Santiago Pilgrimage Route makes its way through its arable lands.
The layout of the village is fairly regular and the popular architecture uses mainly stone and tile. Doorways of stone arches alternate with lintels with pointed grooves or of triangular shape and the village still conserves some traditional elements, such as the conical inglenook chimneys. Casa Sanz, Casa Gil and Casa Moreno together form a beautiful whole and the imposing noble house of Martinez de Aspurz also deserves a mention. There are some beautiful barn buildings and a village water fountain. The old Town Hall, with its pediment-like triangular lintel and interesting double ogee window, was selected to house the Museum of Contemporary Art in Martes.
At present, the Museum is showing the work of David Muñoz, an artist from Madrid who lives in Jaca. The exhibition is a retrospective of his work in the last 15 years, in which he shows his interest in geometric shapes in movement. In the near future, the ground floor is due to house an ethnological museum showing the customs, traditions, economy and ways of life of this area.
